Team Rewind had a busy 2022 (didn’t we all?)
Three new backup and recovery integrations, $10 million in annual revenue, 800 volunteer hours, one SOC 2 Type 2 report, and 10,000 new data heroes able to recover their data instantly.
Beyond backups: new integrations and a new product vision
In 2022, Rewind introduced three new backup and recovery integrations for Atlassian’s suite of products: Backups for Jira, Backups for Confluence, and Backups for Bitbucket.
Utilizing a new method of backing up and restoring data, our team was able to significantly reduce the time it takes to build new backup integrations, resulting in more backup products for more types of apps. In 2023, we plan to continue expanding our product line beyond backups and recovery toward a holistic, total data management solution.
Our busiest BFCM yet
Of course, backing up and restoring data is still Rewind’s bread and butter. And this year, there was plenty of bread to go around. Rewind now backs up and secures over 3 petabytes of data or 92 billion files. 40.3 terabytes (TB) of data, or 607 million files, are added weekly! For reference, 1 TB of storage equals 1,000 GB of data— or about 16 entry-level smartphones’ worth of data.
When it comes to data backups and recovery, Black Friday/Cyber Monday is like the Superbowl, World Cup, and Olympics rolled into one. And during BFCM 2022, Rewind was ready for game time.
As you can probably guess, Rewind’s total number of webhooks received jumps during this busy shopping season. Rewind uses webhooks to exchange information with the various platforms via their respective APIs (think of a webhook as the bridge between Rewind and Shopify, for example. Every time a merchant makes a change to their Shopify store, Rewind uses a webhook to receive that change and automatically back it up).
For just one customer, we received over 5.1 million webhooks from Friday to Monday. That’s +5,000,000 changes automatically backed up, secured, and able to be reversed in minutes.
To prepare for this yearly uptick in traffic, Rewind instituted a code freeze, meaning no changes were made to the product that could potentially affect customers. Extra security and CloudOPs professionals were on call, just in case. Thanks to the hard work of Rewind engineering, BFCM 2022 was a secured success.
Living our values in 2022
At Rewind, we strive to ensure we’re living up to our values daily. 2022 was an outstanding year to give back, and Rewinders rose to the challenge. Using their Volunteer Days, we volunteered over 800 hours in our local communities.
As a bunch of trivia nerds, we were extremely excited to blend our love of factoids with giving back. Team Rewind was proud to place third for the total amount of funds raised during World Trivia Night, with all proceeds supporting the Children’s Aid Foundation of Ottawa, which works to support youth in foster care as they transition into adulthood.
We were also proud to support the Ottawa Food Bank with a new fundraiser we deemed “Mango Mike.” Since team Rewind exceeded our donation goal, our fearless leaders, Mike Potter and James Ciesielski, will dye their hair and beard, respectively. Mike will be rocking Rewind’s Ripe Mango yellow, and James will be stunning in Rewind Electric Purple. Most importantly, we came together to raise over $11,000 for the Ottawa Food Bank.
Rewind is lucky to have a lovely new office space in Ottawa, and in 2022, we showed it off. Our first-ever external user group was hosted in our new space this year, as well as plenty of game nights, office-wide lunches, and demos.
2022 in the news
In 2022, we were thankful to have our hard work recognized. Rewind won a Deloitte Technology Fast 500 award for our growth and dedication to engineering excellence. Rewind also earned a place on the Globe and Mail’s list of Canada’s Top Growing Companies.
While not an award, Rewind also significantly leveled up our security chops. We were proud to announce our SOC 2, Type 2 certification, an audited security credential that ensures we follow a defined set of security protocols and best practices.
Looking forward to 2023 – and beyond
As we approach the new year, Rewind has no plans to slow down. We’re going to be launching more backup and recovery integrations, more security solutions, and more ways for our customers to be in control of their business-critical data. We’re comfortable being uncomfortable, and we’re ready to stretch ourselves to continue to offer world-class backup and recovery tools.
