How BoxoUSA runs a 2,000-SKU Shopify store without the 2 AM backup panic

“The biggest benefit of working with Rewind is the peace of mind. I know that if I make a mistake, Shopify crashes, or our data is stolen, that Rewind has me covered. I can easily log in and access my data and restore it.”

That’s how Jordan Davis, Website Manager at BoxoUSA, describes running his company’s storefront today: bulk updates, product imports, catalog changes, all without the anxiety that used to come with hitting “import” on 2,000-plus SKUs. That confidence wasn’t always there. It’s the direct result of a two-year-old lesson that reshaped how BoxoUSA treats its Shopify store, and how Jordan works now is the real story.

What BoxoUSA does

BoxoUSA manufactures and sells tools and tool storage, serving customers that range from large manufacturing plants for companies like Ford Motor Company and Starbucks down to individual mechanics stocking a home garage. The team sells through dealers and through its direct-to-consumer Shopify storefront at BoxoUSA.com, which means the eCommerce site is the company’s only direct sales channel.

“As the Website Manager, it is my responsibility to ensure that our website is up and running 24/7/365,” Jordan said. “If it goes down for any reason, we do not make money.”

The wake-up call

Before Rewind, BoxoUSA had no backup system for Shopify, even though Jordan was regularly running bulk product updates and full catalog imports, the kind of work where one wrong selection can affect thousands of SKUs at once.

In May 2024, BoxoUSA discovered that its entire product catalog of more than 2,000 products was missing from its live storefront, with no collections or listings left standing. The timing raised the stakes: the deletion coincided with the company’s biggest sale of the year for Memorial Day weekend, with paid ads actively driving traffic to a storefront that suddenly had nothing to sell.

Rather than treating it as a one-off occurrence, the team used the incident to close a gap they hadn’t previously prioritized: the lack of a safety net for accidental changes to production data. It became the catalyst for putting real backup and recovery infrastructure in place, so that data loss of this scale would never again put the business at risk.

Shopify support pointed him to the same question everyone asks: did you have a backup? The only one available was two weeks old and missing the new products and updates from that stretch. Jordan spent the weekend restoring what he could and manually rebuilding the rest, product by product.

“After this incident my boss asked how I was going to prevent this from happening again,” Jordan said. That question is what sent him looking for a real backup solution, and it’s the last time BoxoUSA operated without one.

Why this wasn’t really a BoxoUSA problem

Shopify doesn’t ship with a customer-accessible backup. No built-in undo, no version history, no point-in-time restore. That means any team running a serious business on Shopify, however careful, is running a production workload without production-grade protection behind it. BoxoUSA’s incident wasn’t a one-off failure of process; it was the default state of the platform showing up at the worst possible moment.

How BoxoUSA chose Rewind

Jordan brought the same rigor to picking a backup solution that he brings to running the store. He went straight to the Shopify App Store and set a clear bar: an app rated above 4.0 with a substantial number of reviews. “If an app has too few reviews, I assumed it was too new. If an app had exactly 5 stars, I assumed it was biased reviews, or also too new.”

Rewind had 100-plus reviews at 4-plus stars at the time. Jordan read the app description, watched the videos, researched Rewind independently, and found the subscription priced below comparable options. That combination, proof plus value, closed the decision.

A few clicks, and Rewind was running

“Rewind was extremely easy to implement. It legitimately only took a few clicks to get going with the Rewind Shopify app. After downloading and selecting my subscription, all I did was choose which information I wanted backed up and how often, then boom, done.”

What changed: how BoxoUSA operates now

This is the part that matters most. Rewind didn’t just close the gap from 2024, it changed Jordan’s day-to-day relationship with the store’s data.

He now checks Rewind periodically as routine maintenance, not crisis response. And the value shows up in small, constant ways, not just the big catastrophic one. Jordan recently updated a toolbox listing after the manufacturer changed its dimensions. A week later, he needed the original dimensions back and couldn’t find them anywhere, until he checked Rewind.

“Rewind had the previous version. This saved me the hassle of sorting through hundreds of old emails and chats to try and find the information.”

That’s the pattern now: bulk updates without dread, single-item restores in minutes, and a backup check that takes seconds instead of a weekend of manual rebuilding.

“Selfishly, Rewind is job security. It protects me and the company I work for from data loss on our Shopify store. If we need it, we can get it fast. Downtime is a company’s enemy, and Rewind cuts the downtime from losing data down to almost nothing.”

Jordan’s advice to other Shopify teams

Jordan’s take for peers weighing whether a third-party backup is worth it is direct, and it comes from someone who’s run the store both ways: without protection, and with it.

“As someone who has dealt with my entire company’s product library being deleted and not having a backup, trust me, you want the insurance. Especially if you are running a Shopify web store; Shopify does not have a native data backup so once something is gone, it is gone. Invest in the peace of mind of having your data stored securely through Rewind.”

For a store where the website is the only direct sales channel, that math is easy to see in hindsight. Jordan would rather make it obvious before the next incident than after.

“I love Rewind. I can literally sleep better at night because of you. Thank you for what you do.”
