A Jira Admin’s Guide to ScriptRunner Backup and Restore

A Jira Admin's Guide to ScriptRunner Backup and Restore

ScriptRunner admins open Rewind for two very different reasons. One is routine. The other is the kind of incident that ends up in a postmortem.

Rewind now backs up ten ScriptRunner resource types daily: scheduled jobs, script listeners, scripts, script fragments, behaviors, scripted fields, script variables, script folders, the escalation service, and settings. Nine of those ten restore at the item level; settings are captured for reference only. Here’s what that actually looks like in practice.

The ordinary Tuesday

Someone edited a script last week, and a workflow has been behaving strangely ever since. Nobody remembers exactly what changed.

With Rewind, every script, fragment, and listener gets a full version history and diff, automatically, as part of the daily backup. Browse back through previous versions, compare two side by side, and copy the working source straight out of the vault, see exactly what changed and when, without guessing or asking around. This is the lower-stakes, higher-frequency reason most admins end up opening Rewind, not a disaster, just a normal Tuesday where something needs tracing back.

The bigger incident

The other reason is less frequent and has a lot higher stakes. A scheduled job or a script listener gets deleted, or a bulk change wipes out a chunk of a team’s automation. No errors. Jira looks healthy. The work the scripts were doing just stops, quietly, until something downstream breaks and someone traces it back.

For a single item, restore is a few clicks: find the script, job, or listener in the vault, and restore it on its own without touching anything else. For a bigger incident, an account-level restore rebuilds a whole ScriptRunner configuration in dependency order, scripts before the jobs and fields that depend on them, so nothing comes back broken because it was restored out of sequence.

For fragments, variables, and listeners specifically, restore merges rather than overwrites. Anything a team created since the backup is preserved, not wiped by the restore.

What’s backed up

Scheduled jobs, script listeners, scripts, script fragments, behaviors, scripted fields, script variables, script folders, the escalation service, and settings. All ten, daily, with version history on every item. Nine of the ten restore at the item level; settings are visible for reference but can’t be restored; there’s no write path for them.

Who this is for

If you’re a Jira admin or DevOps lead running ScriptRunner, this covers the automation layer your team already depends on, the same way Rewind already covers your Jira data. If your team has been burned before by an edit nobody can explain, or a scheduled job that silently stopped running, this closes that gap directly.

Getting connected

1. A Rewind organization admin connects ScriptRunner under your existing Jira instance, supplying an Atlassian email and API token for an account with Jira admin access.

2. Rewind begins daily backups automatically.

3. When something needs tracing or restoring, browse the vault, review version history, or trigger a restore, item-level or account-wide.
